B’Twixt and B’Twain Package

Pretend to be Mark Twain for a day and explore the valley betwixt the beautiful hills of his favorite summer place—Elmira and the Chemung Valley. Let Rufus Tanner House serve as your “homebase” while you explore -- ascend the hills, savor the history, fly the skies, hike the trails, picnic overlooking the Chemung Valley and return to the quiet country setting of our B&B.

- Two consecutive nights/double occupancy in the Empire Room or Victorian Cottage Room at Rufus Tanner House

- Historic trolley ride for two (includes on site visit to the Mark Twain Study where the author wrote many of his books)

- Hike the Mark Twain Trail at Tanglewood (3.1 mile trail is marked with 10 Twain quotes related to nature along the path. While it is worth hiking for whatever distance you are able, those able to go to the top will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Chemung River Valley--the same views that inspired Twain while he penned Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and many other classics while summering in Elmira).

DAY ON A FARM (Sunday and Monday nights only)

Stay in the Victorian Cottage Room on Sunday and Monday night. Spend Monday at Spring Meadows Farm, a homestead that raises and sells organically grown vegetables. Experience a day in the life of a farmer as you work alongside Andy and Jen gardening, attending to the pastured livestock (hens, pigs, milk cows and calves) and assisting with farm chores.

9:30-1:30 Assist with work in the gardens, assist with field work using oxen and take part in general upkeep on the farm.

1:30-3:30 On your Own

3:30-5:30 Assist with chores (bring in milk cows and milk; check for eggs; check on pastured calves and pigs).

Prices include two overnight stays, breakfast each morning and taxes.

INTRO TO OXEN (3 days)

$460 per student (ALL INCLUSIVE)

Three days of training with experienced teacher and experienced team of oxen. Three nights in the Empire Room or Victorian Cottage Room and breakfast each morning at Rufus Tanner House B&B. Train with two yokes of oxen and one single ox (one introduced each day with a .5 hour lesson) followed by hands-on work together with trainer and oxen. Books about oxen are available for student use and time to pick the trainer’s brain can be arranged . Time: 9:30 am-1:30 pm each day. Additional student is $120.
